You've been hearing from mature people with real world experience this whole time... Just because they didn't say, "Oh happy day! You're going to live the rest of your life in pure bliss, and it will be hearts and chocolates and poo poo poo flowers for the rest of your life!!!", doesn't mean they don't have a valid point.
