If you want to have a smooth paint job, it's not in the paint but the surface you are paining. That surrond needs to be sanded, primered, sanded again, more filler (if needed), sanded, primered, sanded and then paint.
I would use 500 - 600 grit to knock down any body filler and 800 for finishing off the primer to get ready for paint.
