I am trying to get BUSHINGS for this 4 BOLT LCA but ford doesnt sell them, ford wants 183.68$ in my area for a new arm, I hear the bushing is an unreplaceable item. NAPA has some type of bushing for 18.98, but i bet its the 2 bolt one. this has got to be whats making this annoying popping noise. arrrg. Thanks, James. Im in MN if anyone cares Ill buy the new arm, I know im gunna hafta.

So did I. I was pretty upset when I found out that my bushings had gone bad, and I had to buy the whole arm to fix the problem. I tried buying the bushings from NAPA, but after pulling off the wheel to look at the problem, and taking the bushings out of the box, it was obvious that they were not the right ones. So I just bought the whole arms from 96BlackSE, and I'm glad I was able to get a discount on them!

They were a PITA to install though. On the passenger side, the ball joint wouldn't come loose. We ended up sawing the control arm in two, and buying a special tool to pry the ball joint loose from the knuckle. On the driver's side, we didn't have that problem, but as I'm sure you know the tranny is in the way of two of the bolts and that's a whole new problem to tackle. One of the engine lift points had been sawn off before I bought the car, so we had to support the engine and tranny from the bottom. There's barely enough room to get the front two bolts out, and we had to work using leverage with a 2x4 stuck between the tranny and the subframe to wiggle it around a bit until there was finally room to get them out. It took about 8 hours to install both of the arms. Oh, and the very last problem that we had was the ball joint pinch bolt on the driver's side, which snapped when we torqued it. It seems that those old bolts seem to cause problems fairly often.

After getting the old arms off, it was very obvious that the bushings were indeed bad. On both arms, I could wiggle the front bushings back and forth using my hand!

The tool to use to remove the ball joint is called a "pickle fork". As long as the ball joint is junk, using the tool is simple. Remove the bolt, insert fork and use a sledge hammer to pound it until free. Workes every time for me.

The pickle fork will invariably tear the ball joint boot, so if you're not replacing the A arm don't use it.

On to my third set of front A arms...

Guess ill try to get the bolts out by jacking it up and see how much space weve got to werk with.If not enuff im gunna cut em. (How tuff was the REINSTALL to ball joint???) Any recomendations on how to put together? Any Drivabilty difference at all: Did it seem ALOT better or was it SLIGHTLY better
