Concha Y Torro is vile.
I bought a couple of bottles and thought I was drinking sawdust steepings. It's one thing to have an oaky taste, but another to think you were sucking on the armrest of a parkbench. :toungue: And I'm sorry, but Californian wines, aside from a few select Syrah's are DECADES behind the rest of the world. Any region that creates a vile concoction such as "Zinfandel" , cannot be taken seriously in my books.....Not after growing up in the Swan Valley and Margaret River Wine regions of Western Australia. I was horrified when I laid my eyes on this swill when I first got to the US. I just looked at it and said "WTF is that crap?"

TDF Lindemans does produce a good Port. Yalumba also does well in this category. I wasn't into Port's but my father did like it now and then. Personally I'm pretty stuck on Merlot's Cab Sav's Shiraz and OCCASIONALLY an unwooded Chardonnay. I typically avoid White Wines though as I get a head-ache from them like it's nobody's business.

If you can find it here grab some Nottage Hill, Jacobs Creek, Penfolds, Yalumba, Rosemount - I could go on, either way you won't go wrong.
For the white wine lovers, track down some Cloudy Bay Chardonnay from NZ - excellent stuff, or Capel Vale Unwooded Chardonnay.

I prefer Tickle Pink for it's oaky flavor and subtle tones. It goes great with both Long John Silvers and Taco Bell.

...and it's twist off top allows u to put it back in the fridge for a couple of weeks. Just remember to follow the instructions on the bottle and "Serve Very Cold."

I'll give the Yalumba a try if I can find it...

I must also excuse myself because I did not go wine shopping for the cabernet that is the subject of this thread. I got a phone call after work from a lady friend and now have an opportunity to buy into an 8 unit townhouse.

This represents a huge deal & could potentially put me on the path to early retirement. Thing is, the ish is hittin' the fan in a big hurry for the contract signing on the to-be-built building so I had to jump right into getting the groundwork in place. I may not post much over the next few weeks as the project goes before town council for final approval & I will likely be making preparations for project financing & what-not.


Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Try a Don Melchor and come back and tell me that! I've had a few young Conchas that were really raw to drink, but for the most part their entire lineup has been good.

You've GOT to be kidding me; I can name dozens of Californian cabs and merlots that torpedo just about anything that the French, Italians, Spaniards and Aussies have put forth. That includes the labels that don't typically make it across Pacific or Atlantic...

Alright, CA does do some pansy-wines, but to paint Atlas, Stag's Leap, Frog's Leap, Cakebread, Chalk Hill and other vaunted cellars with the same brush as some of the cheap Zinfandel makers is nuts!!!

To be honest, wine is about the only thing I'll come running to defend CA on; give them another shot.

My wine drinking buddy and I really enjoyed Black Opal 2003 cabernet.

Chateau Ste Michelle,reds = nasty
Chateau Ste Michelle, whites = not bad

What red wine, easily available at stores, would taste good to an average person, be healthy, and be very affordable? Thanks.

Don't lump white zinfandels with red ones. Red Zinfandels are an honest wine.

Well i've never really gone to wrong with a cab/merlot mix, not exactly wonderful, tastes pretty good and is usually pretty consitent especially in the black opal brand. it's usually about $7 a bottle. (I forgot about a bottle a few year ago and discovered it this fall, it had been properly stored for about 6 years, wasn't sure if it'd be good anymore and I was quite impressed) However, you're taking a crapshoot with a cheap wine that's been sitting for a while)

My personal favorite of all wines so far was a 1998 Pinot Noir from Bridgview Winery in Oregon. Thier black label 98 pinot was especially great alas these wines are starting to get too old now and are either tasting really well or are vinegar.
As for whites u really can't go wrong with reisling, if you can find/afford it the german vintage from 03 was spectacular and is among the best wines i've ever had.

With all of wine remember, it's not what other people like, it's what u like, If you really like that $5 box of white zin, great, at least your enjoying yourself.
