thank god I dont live in CA!!

Hey, at least we are trying to do some good here in Ca. By trying to stamp out the Rice Rage!

In Ca, any vehicle modification the adversely alters the safety of the vehicle (i.e., the clear nonreflective tail lights, vehicle has less than ~2.5" of ground clearence, headlights less than 12" above road surface, etc...), or could increase vehicle emissions which have not been CARB approved are illegal.

thats all good, but what happens when you have an 03 Cobra that you want to mod, basically everything is illegal by those idiotic standards, takes the fun out of modding cars.

So long as the modification has a CARB number, it is legal. Lots of legal upgrades. FYI Vortec S/C has CARB numbers.

I'm absolutely livid right now.

This is what they train police officers with? This?! No wonder they all come off as ignorant asshats... they actually are. How is it fair to assume someone who modifies a car is a street racer? Are they going to pull people from bars because they are potentially going to be drunk in public? All this video does is demonstrate how to successfully profile a sport compact enthusiast, and, as stated before, they are not the ones cops should be worrying about. It's any yahoo with a V8 Mustang or Camaro, guys with their shiny new Porsches, and essentially anyone with an upper-end sports car. So, big blocks get to go free... 150 dB exhaust? Sure, why not, so long as it doesn't have an oversized muffler. Motorcycles loud enough to shatter glass? Great, just make sure there's no decal obscuring the driver's vision. If they're THAT worried about the CARB regulations, maybe they should look into the city and school buses that spew black smoke into the sky. Think maybe they're emmitting more hydrocarbons than a Honda 4 cylinder with advanced timing?

This is utterly ridiculous. I know my K&N open filter disqualifies me from being CARB-friendly, but I didn't know it made me a street racer (potentially a felony). I just spent 20 minutes searching the SDPD site to find any of those names listed at the end with no luck. If a letter is the best I can do, than that's what i'll do, but there must be something more effective.

No, but turning a blind eye to what the drivers of those cars do while attacking the typically younger sport compact crowd seems like it to me. Again, the guys in this video are obsessing over being emissions-friendly. 1.9 vs. 6.0 liters.... Who do you think has the higher potential of emitting harmful toxins with modifications?

There's the rub... technically, in CA, screwing with your timing, exhaust before the cat, etc, is illegal, as it modifies the emissions. CARB laws are tight, and I, at least, aren't disputing the cam gear and the like. Although, last I heard, it's not illegal to have nitrous installed, so long as the bottle is disconnected (show and offroad use). I wouldn't even dispute the reflectorless taillights. Pulling someone over for decals seems like it's a hell of a stretch though, as does calling a colored hose kit "illegal".

The problem is equating any of these modifications with street racing; it doesn't make sense, and does nothing but promote unfair profiling. Here, in L.A., most often someone with a lowered Honda and big muffler is of Mexican or Latino descent. Is it too much of a stretch to contend that SDPD is reinforcing racial profiling? I certainly don't think so, particularly when my colored hose kit makes me a street racer.
