alright ive searched, and ive had my doubts about it. But i have very limited money and want my exhaust to sound better until i save money for a full system. now my question. what would sound better? cutting off the resonator and running a straight pipe or cutting off the rear muffler and putting just a straight pipe? i odnt want something to loud or stupid sounding. thanks for the help.
Hi how ya doin? I live in Holly, MI and im new to the contour. Ive got a 1999 contour se V6 5 Speed

IMO neither will sound nice. just wait until you have enough money for a catback.
removing the resonator would probably sound better than removing the muffler. though I think either option you proposed would probably sound loud and stupid. If you really want to remove the resonator then replace it with a magnaflow or something.
Personally I think cutting off the resonator and/or muffler is just ghetto.

I guess I'll have to play the devils advocate on this one. I removed the resonator on my SVT, and it deepend the sound, without becoming too much louder, and its defintely not harsh. It has typical cold rasp, but thats gone by the time its warmed up enough to get on it. I would think removing the resonator is a great place to start if you're looking to go the cheap route.

i have had the following combinations when i had my 99 csvt: -stock, ok but too mellow -no resonator w/ stock mufflers, sounded good idling but sounded like a riced out honda anytime i applied throttle. bad -no resonator w/ flowmaster mufflers, sounded great idling although a bit loud attracting unnecessary attention from cops and still too much like a riced out honda. still bad -magnaflo resonator w/ flowmaster mufflers, i liked the way it sounded and i got alot of compliments about it but the drone on the freeway was significant. good if you don't mind alot of drone.
i have heard a local ceg'ers 98 csvt with the magnaflo resonator and stock mufflers. this sounds very good. excellent balance between throatier exhaust note without rasp or drone. this is what i am going with on my 2k csvt. and cheap too.

But a glasspack muffler will blow out the fiberglass sooner or later and revert to being the same as a streight pipe.
