I generally agree with your post, but this statement overlooks the very real oversights of the Iraq campaign. America took the active decision to invade Iraq. A lot of good has happened there, but also a lot of bad, and the US is proving to be pretty weak on the "psychological" side. No one gains unless our failures are analyzed.
Re: Iran - Perhaps the most "unique" aspect of their current foreign policy is the professed desire to wipe another country of the face of the Earth. Another important difference is Hamas' willingness to sacrifice lives in the name of their religion. Not exactly a vote of confidence for the "peaceful" nature of their nuclear program.
