There is no way to check the mechanical timing. I recomend OTC tool number 6486 and gates timing belt kit when doing the VCT engines (or any zetec for that matter) the tool locks both crank and cam inplace and is well worth the 20 bucks. Sorry there is no easy way, your going to have to open it back up and redo the timing job if you suspect it being the problem. PM me if you need any help.
