First off, I don't think anyone joins the Marines thinking "Hey, if the Army has eased up on recruits, maybe the Marines have too."
Second...and this is just the liquor talking, but I sort of found myself thinking "Hey, it's just Basic...it's the specialist schools where the serious knife-sharpening happens", although I'm not sure that's entirely so. However, I *do* think it's valid that the historic model for Army indoctrination isn't going to work forever.
