though not all, there are some very talented guys out there. i still prefer to listen to old school stuff. luckily, i have almost everything i like on cd. they just brought back a radio station here in LA that was closed back when i was a kid. they play mostly old school rap and only some, decent new school stuff. awesome station (KDAY)but it doesnt come in to strong in my part of town
lets not forget that some of the old schoolers are still around and are still making music that doesnt consist of [censored], killing and cussing like LL Cool J, De La Soul, Beastie Boys, Queen Latifah and some others im probably not thinking of right now. didnt Public Enemy somewhat recently release something?
i listen to rock/alternative music too, equally if not moreso. and they also have their idiots who give the music a bad name. usually from drug usage but also from tools like Marlyn Manson.
i often prefer hip hop when im cruisin around bumpin

hotblack98 names some good artists that meet your criteria. your view on rap is based on a very limited scope. it is such a huge behemoth of a genre that it is almost impossible to know everything about it. gangster rap had it's day, but it really isn't as popular anymore. today's "pop" rap (as i call it) is all about women, clubs, and dancing. now that isn't the best message in the world, but it is a far cry from the days of NWA. and your reference to "all stars of rap" with snoop dogg is acceptable, but again limited. he is an all star without doubt, but even his most recent stuff is about money and jewlery (see: drop it like it's hot). if he had an album like he raised to fame with (doggystyle) he wouldn't be mainstream. i really feel that rappers HAVE to put out songs about money/jewlery/girls to become successful. all of the artists with a true message in their music (common, mos def, talib, etc...) are considered "underground" to the mainstream. that's not to say they don't have a huge following, but it is mostly unheard of to anyone not "into" the rap scene.

The best rap/hip hop has never been mainstream. It's always been "underground", if you want to call it that. Whether 2006 or 1986, nothing has changed other than rap is more popular now than ever but it's still about what the DJ can play in the club and over the airways; what sells and gets folks to listen to the radio. Nothing new under the sun.

To the dude calling me out - LMAO...sheltered. Son, I guarantee I've been to places you couldn't even speel, with a dictionary at hand! In case you don't know I'm 30, Australian (of European background) and I travel a hell of a lot with my work as well as for my own pleisure. Not to whip out my e-dick, but here is a list of countries I have visited AND have been to nightlubs in: Australia (obviously) England Croatia Serbia Greece Germany Holland Ukraine Malaysia Japan Singapore Techno reigns supreme in all these places, whether you like it or not. Although rap may be popular with a lot of white "kids" of the younger age...you will find that as peole get older and more wise, they realise the messages that rap puts forward are BS. And then some of those people shy away from rap and towards other genres like altenrative or techno. I myself, love both. Case in point: I went to a Pauyl Van Dyk concert last night in Detroit and the crowds was predominantly of a mid 20's and up crowd. Most the white rap listenenrs are HS and up to their 20's until they have that epiphany which snaps them out the rap-phase. Sure a lot of people still listen to rap, but I can guarantee that of a poll of the older (25+) US population you will find that the rap listneing crowd is probably even beat by country and alternative! You can lull yourself into believing that Rap/ Hip-Hop is king, but that may only be in your little world. Take a trip some time to Europe, Australia, Asia and you'll realise that rap doesn't penetrate very far into these cultures - in fact it's often viewed of as comical due to the apparent shallowness of the messages that rap portrays.

Back in the Quad Cities IA/IL, the alternative/rock station (93.5, now they took over the classic rock 96.9) was the most listened to station of people 18-40, even though there were at least 3 "top 40" stations...

Sorta off-color, but Stazi/Kane, what's the metal scene like in Germany? I'd imagine it's bigger in Sweden and Finland at the moment, but Germany has a slew of good bands....

So far, I have no idea I'm trying to meet some non-Americanized Germans, but that's kinda hard since there's a lot of US bases here (the people near the base have adopted American ways... like the club I went to on New Years... might as well have been in Texas).
