Please help a newbie with a quick question - I have a 1998 (E0) Contour SVT, will the $895 BAT/SP Motorsports replacement transaxle fit my car without modification? I am confused about the shift tower differences and the fact that some Contours have rod shifters and some have cable.
I am looking for the most economical way to replace my transaxle that has bad 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. This replacement transaxle sounds like the answer if it will bolt right in without requiring additional parts or modifications. I am not interested in all of the upgrades, just want a fully functional transaxle.
TIA

Thanks for the quick response. I have changed the suspension on my SVT (ST200 struts on stock springs), have installed superchargers, turbos, and have pulled motors on RWD cars but for some reason this FWD job scares me. Anyone have an opinion about the difficulty of changing the transaxle solo? Sure seemed like a PIA reading the how to...
A local AAMCO type place quoted a fairly cheap number, something like $250, when I looked into this awhile go and I'm thinking it might be worth it to let them do the work. I am just being a sissy?
I could have unlimited beer and pizza on hand if an experienced CEG'r in Ohio felt like lending a hand

$250 to swap a transmission?! Hahaha yea right.
From Terry.
Motorsports MTX75's.
Bit of info. Eric at BAT has done a fantastic job in sourcing these out of Europe and it's a chance not to be missed by anyone who is in the market for a new, stoc V6 MTX75. To add to that, ALL of the transmissions that are sold in the 'upgraded' versions, with say Torsen etc,for both BAT and SPM are built at HMS Inc. As advertised they also offer futher unique mods that can only be had on HMS 'built' transmissions. Later this year HMS Inc will be offering another addition to our lineup of custom built MTX75, the 'Gold Seal' MTX. This also will be based on the brand new MTX's from BAT but along with all our current unique upgrades we will add in another set of custom features, some 4 or 5 more, that will further enhance the operation and duarability of the V6 MTX75. The new designs are currently being made at our M/C shop and will be inculded into the list when we offer our first 'Gold Seal' MTX75.....Just an FYI.

I was just gonna say, if u add any modifications along with the purchase, they're done at HMS.. which is sure as hell not a bad way to go.
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.

Yeah, but what about rod-shift pre-98s? Do the BAT MTX75s work there, too?

The MTX's sold by BAT are cable shift. They can be converted but the cost will rise of course.

JTod,
I wouldn't trust AAMCO to work on the trans. Even just a simple swap for swap can have some pretty nasty results. There has been several nasty reports back here of people with bad results from going there. You should be able to complete the in and out swap by yourself in a full day or make a weekend of it if you want to take your time with everything.
One main thing to consider is that you should look at clutch replacement/upgrade and also that you'll need to have your flywheel ground or if you want to upgrade you can buy a lightweight replacement.
