I've had a CEL for a P1518 for over a year now. I replaced my original IMRC with a used one for a 98 Taurus the first time I saw the code. Original IMRC had a damaged cable. The Taurus IMRC cable was too short to mount on top of the valve cover so I moved it under the intake pipe. Next day, same code. Thought the IMRC was bad.
Bought another used IMRC from a 99 SVT, installed in the correct spot this time. Next day, same code.
Finally replaced with a brand new IMRC and new IMRC grommets, and did a tune up. Plug wires, O2 sensor, TB cleaning, fuel filter, speed sensor.
Car ran amazing for 2 days. Pulled hard from 4k. Best it's been since I owned the car. No CEL.
Start the car this morning. P1518 is back and no more power burst at 4k.
WTF is going on!?!?! I'm sooo tired of this damn code.

I thought the "correct spot" was the wrong spot. I read that the IMRC should be relocated away from the intake manifold because of the heat.
Edit. Isn't that why a suggested relocation is near the battery?

I know what you mean about the heat. I planned on moving it to a better spot, but after it was working fine.
2 days on a new IMRC then stuck open?

Read the posted thread. Maybe it is not too late for the IMRC if you do it before it gets worse. Good luck.

Obvious questions:
Do the secondaries close when the engine is started?
Do the secondaries stick ? (test by hand with cable disconnected)
You may just have a wiring problem to the IMRC box telling you they are open.

You may have sludged up secondaries. Have you tried cleaning them? If they are sticky, it can put a lot of strain on the IMRC box.

Those 2 things I plan on testing today after work.

UIM/LIM are clean. Problem existed before and after a 3L swap with complete UIM/LIM cleaning and rebuild.

Ok, so I did a little testing. Looked under the hood today to see what the IMRC was actually doing. The runners were stuck in the open position at any RPM. Disconnected the IMRC power, started the car. Runners returned to closed. Shut off the car, plugged the IMRC power back in. Started the car. Worked fine. Revved up the car and watch the runners open and close at the correct times. So everything looked good. Let the car idle for about 1 min, and watched the cable. Randomly after about 1 min, the IMRC pulled the cable to open the runners. This is just sitting there at idle. I repeated the same thing over again. Worked fine again for about 1 min, then the IMRC pulled open. Why is my ECU telling the IMRC to open at idle and stay open for good?
