Hm, Tempo's are a very good choice, my first car was an '87 Tempo with something like 90K on it, my bro had bought it 2 years prior and it had like 76K when he bought it, I ran it up to about 130K or so, little 2.3L ATX. The ATX had a problem with the speedo gear being plastic and wearing out, so the speedo didn't work for awhile, other than that, it didn't have many other problems (battery, alternator, belts, water pump, and something like 3 solenoids, 1 of which blew right after I installed it) but it only had those problems because I used to beat on it, and everything else was routine, oil changes every 3K miles, exhaust from the cat back (only cost me like $100 including install and tax!

) tires, and brakes. Good car, comfortable and pretty reliable, it's still running around on my hill as someone bought it for $500 as a DD.
EDIT: All problems listed were around the 100K mark, plus it was almost as old as I am, so they were to be expected.
