I was just thinking the other day about how many of those things are still on the road, they must be reliable, just very ugly and un ford like on the inside.

Or I just see that same green one all over the country

My parents have had great luck w/ Grand Am's. They were all pretty much indesructable. They may never look like much, but they always ran. Pretty cheap in PA, don't know about the Southwest.

Stay away from the mid-90s Quad 4... I've seen a couple blow headgaskets pretty easy.

Same with early Neons, but hey, do like Russell did and get a car with a blown head gasket, replace it yourself and save $$$.

the quad 4 is a junk motor. ive done a head job one one of them before, the timing chain jumped cause the tensioner was bad and a guide was broken, and it bent the valves. id never ever buy one

on the other hand, my stratus had a siezed motor not a blown head gasket it has the 2.4L, and i replaced the rear main seal and timing belt before i put it in, cause ive done a head job on one of them cause the belt broke and bent valves

Never heard about the quad 4 trouble. I know my brother tried to kill his Grand Am w/ quad 4, so he could buy himself a new truck. That darn motor wouldn't die. Neutral drops, rally racing, no maintainance, it just kept running. Maybe he was just lucky. My parents other GA was the V6, a 94 IIRC. It had 285k miles when my brothers GF totaled it in a DUI. Motor still ran great, the rest of the car was screwed. [swears under breath at dumb b**ch who killed my Mom's car]

+2 My mom had an 88 Tempo with the 2.3 and ATX. Then in 94 we traded that in for a 92 Topaz with the same setup but two doors instead of four. I beat the sh!t out of that car it took it. The 2.3L I4 is a redesign of a 60's I6 truck motor with two cylinders chopped off, so it's pretty bullet proof. I ran it without coolant for 15 miles at 50mph (at first I didn't know then I did but I was in the middle of nowhere during hunting season in Killdare County, WI) and it was fine after the hose was fixed. The parts are pretty cheap too.

Early 90's honda Civic - cheap, reliable, super-economical, and cheap to fix (if ever necessary).
