My sister in law has suddenly fallen on some hard times. She needs to get a cheap decent car fairly quickly to get her to and from work, school, etc. She lives in Phoenix, AZ if that matters.

Anyway, a good guy friend of hers suggested the following: 1979-1984 VW Rabbit or Jetta, 1984-1987 Toyota Tercel, or a 1985-1991 VW Golf or Jetta.

I thought the Tercel idea and maybe the golf or jetta's of those years soudned ok, but I dont know about the Rabbit.

Can you recommend any cars that she might be able to find super cheap that could get her from A to B? I have no idea how much cash she has but I can't imagine it's much at all.

Thanks for any ideas. I can't even find any Tours around in the area that she could afford!

If you're looking for cheap, then you are looking for something to fix, unless you are REALLY lucky.

The cheap ones I've bought always end up with multiple repairs, things that even mechanics couldn't find prior to my purchasing.

But, I would suggest a Toyota Corolla, or a Honda Civic, early 90's or so.

I bought my 94 Ford Probe se MTX for $1000 (not sure how cheap you are lookin) and have had no problems with it at all. I did a complete tune up and changed fluids. The only thing that I had to replace was the exhaust.
Plus one thing that I have noticed is that parts for this car are fairly cheap, I guess thats because its shares the same platform with the Mazda MX-6 & 626.

Pretty much any of the cars listed other than the Rabbit should suffice as long as they have had the necessary maintenence over their lifespan.

The German made VWs of those years are reliable cars, as are almost all models of any year for Toyota cars.

How many miles were on the probe when you bought it? My wife had a 96 probe that we bought at around 80,000 miles and it was also a good car with little work needed.

I bought it with 88,000 miles on it back in 2003. I had to do the tune up right away, I noticed as I was driving it away it stummbled off the line. I have had it for 3 years now and haven't had to do anything else to it.

I would go with an early Civic but thats cause i bought one 3 months ago...For my winter car i got a 1990 Civic for $594 dollars out the door (tax, title, license) and i have had absolutely no problems with it...I love the car

I've made multiple trips out of town (longest one was 3 hours one way) and it hasnt had any problems at all...Go with the Honda!

My pick too. Great durability and reliability with low purchase price. Parts are available cheap too, which is a when not an if in this market. Parts for the others will KILL you. I learned that on a 1985 Nova.

Oh, and the Corolla was redesigned in 1988.
