Like a hot knife in soft butter! If it's any tougher than that, you're doing it wrong!

I've done it with my old 90 Sentra 4 speed, a 91 Jeep Cherokee 4.0L/5 speed, and my SVT.

I sold the Sentra to a friend and the clutch cable broke on it right before he junked it... he did exactly as you described. Put it in 1st, push in clutch, start, and you're off, clutchless shifting. Of course it would die at every stop, but that's no problem.
