OK go into device manager, find the external. Right click>properties and then click the policies tab. Uncheck the enable write caching box.
The jumpers are on the back of the drive between data cable and the power hookup. It should tell you on the drive how to set the jumper to master.
Windows wouldn't see my external unless I set it that way so that's what I'm basing my advice on.
Has the drive been formatted?
