I have some basic questions.
Is the external connected via USB?
Does XP give you a popup saying it found the external drive?
Do you remove the drive often or is it always(or almost always) connected to your computer?
Do you have the external jumpered as a master?
When you say not reading properly what do you mean? Does the computer not see the drive? Is it saying bad data? Just need something a little more specific.
My C drive is labeled as drive 2(I have 3) so I don't think that's your problem.
