Get a new 2006 loaded V6 Hyundai Sonata and remove the emblems.
If you're really interested, the guy up the street from me wants to unload his 2002 X-type. It needs a new engine -$12k - and its not under warranty. He says the car gave him problems from the day he bought it. Nice image though.

Why exactly is status so important to you to begin with? If there is no reason other than worrying what people will think of you based on what you drive that is pathetic. If there is a business reason thats a little more understandable, but I still don't see why a brand new Hyundai wouldn't have a good enough image.
People who buy cars because they think other people will think they are cool or have money are way too insecure.

Am I missing something here?
Not at all. I assume that he's looking for a clean, nice, good-looking car with some sort of "image", and frankly I think a 6s done up like I posted should fit all of his needs without going through the hassle of looking for a good-condition used whatever. And the Mazda doesn't have the Hyundai stigma.

I don't know what he does for a living, but in some jobs like real estate the image of success is very important. While all of you might put down people who rely on what type of car you drive to judge who you are, the fact remains that for a large chunk of the general population that's exactly what happens.
I stick by my BMW recommendation. If it's a CPO the cost of ownership will be very minimal, at least until the warranty runs out.

I just wondered, as you had coincidentally described Diva very well (I have 35% tint).

Many people are also turned off when their salesperson turns up in a fancy car. Even if completely unwarranted, they think they're paying too much in overhead/commission so the agent can afford that pricey car.
