Beg to differ .. he said image, not status. Hyundais certainly have an image, particularly new upper models -- that you're economic and smart. (Have you seen the new Sonata and Azera? Not utilitarian in my dictionary...)
Now if he was going for status, I'd say otherwise.
So what your saying is that anyone who buys '06 Sonata or Azera is economic and smart?
Nope, sorry, not believing it one bit. Hyundais depreciate far too fast to be called a good economic decision. Maybe, if you hold onto the car for 7yrs, but in reality few people hold onto cars that long so I'm nixing that idea. Hell any car is a good economic decision if you hold onto it long enough
Reality is that perception is everything and while 5% of the general pop believe a Huyundai is a good bargain, the other 95% just think your'e a cheap bastard for buying a POS Korean car. Sorry Matt but that is reality!
And remember, in life it is not what you think but what everyone else thinks that is important.

IMO that image of economic and smart is something Hyundai is currently trying to achieve, but hasn't yet. I will admit that Hyundai's new line of vehicles has been receiving praise among the automotive industry; however, that image has not yet trickeled down to the general public. My feeling is that Hyundai is still carrying the "cheap alternative" with a great waranty image among the general public. I'm not saying that this is the case with these cars anymore, but I don't think the general public has caught on yet. Just my $.02.

OK. Cost of ownership might exclude the Jag & Q45 as they tend to have a cluster of 'little' things that need attention. So you're lookin' at a Lexus or Acura, I think.
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

I dunno. I guess it's just me, but I never felt the need to brag to other people about what type of car I drive. As long as the car satisfied me, I could care less if other people thought it wasn't a big enough "status". There's plenty other ways for me to show off how much money I make or what I was capable of, whether I drive a Sonata or an S55. If the type of car we drive is the only judgement of our character, then we're in for a lot of rocky times. BTW, I'm gay. I drive a Jetta, thx.[/status BS] -SAV

Why would you give a rat's posterior how people view your car?
ANYWAY...
Avoid anything European if you care about reliability and cost of ownership. I would also avoid a new car in that case.
You're not getting an Acura TL on your budget. The cheapest 2004+ in your area is $26,000 on cars.com. The older ones look like an old car. Nothing is worse for perception than an old luxury marque.
I like the Lincoln LS in that range, the Infiniti I35 (the Maxima won't have the panache you seek), a well-used G35 would work as well. I would avoid a Lexus ES or IS due to image.

I would have to say the best bang for he buck is going to be the TSX. It has class, reliability, great fun to drive, within your budget and has one of the best resale values out there.
I like the Bimmer ideas aswell butyoucan get newer for cheaper with the Acura.

I wouldn't put the Q45 in the same boat as the Jag. It might not be on 100% reliability with a Lexus, but it isn't far behind.

I think your car can represent a lot of things, and I think in many business environments having a nice car is essential. Just my opinion.

Pffft...whatever...just get a loaded Mazda 6s 5-door in red, tint the glass, and keep it clean.
