had a scary thing happen today. I was out cruising at a good pace and a strong headwind caused the plastic deflector right below the radiator catch pavement and make this horrible scraping noise...scared the crap out of me. needless to say, I ripped it off so I could continue driving. the friction between the plastic and the road melted quite a bit of it as well. anyone else had this problem, or is it just me?

I have heard of instances where, (what I think you're talking about) has actually broken free and flew off at high speeds.
If this is what I'm thinking it is, the front air dam, it is important. Its job is to interupt the air flow under the car and prevent it from being a smooth slow flowing air mass, which can make the car act as an airfoil at high speeds.

the deflector on my previous Contour did that. IIRC the part was around $70 from my local dealer. It's not a critical part, wait until Bill gets settled in and order one from him.

Water ripped mine off of the car. I'm not going to explain how though. It is undamaged though. Right now it is sitting in the garage waiting for the car. It has been off for over a year.

The part can't be too critical. It was decontented in 99 so at least some of the 99 and all of the 00 models don't have it.

It may not be critical per se.
However it's a very nice splash shield to protect to fog lights and wiring/connectors inthe front
Plus it really does act as a air deflector to keep underside air out of the engine compartment. When this high speed air does get in there it lifts some weight off the front wheels. That is very bad as one can imagine!!!
BTW - All SVT's have it, but then again it's different then the stock piece...
