You know I've seen this topic before and everyone always gets in saying blah blah blah to much work just go buy an AWD car.

Whatever happen to customizing? He's inquiring about whether it's physically possible. Sounds like he has a few posts here pointing in the right direction. If someone wants to do this think about how sweet that would be.

It would be similar to the guy who took a Corvette C5 chasis and powertrain and retro fitted it to his 67 Camaro. Sure it cost him loads of money (I recall $56k when everything was said and done), but he has the sweetest 67 Camaro I've ever seen (as far as being modernized).

If the guy or anyone else for that matter is willing to invest the time and money then go right ahead. The project and idea is sweet and I'm sure it can be completed seeing how a few Mondeo's had the option. I realize it has a slightly different platform, but the components are there to be retro fitted, which is half the battle in my opinion.

That's a top-of-the-line sports car and a timeless classic. A restored Camaro and a C5 are very special, expensive things, and combining the best of both gives you a very unique car. There's a guy building a 65 Mustang - around an SN95 driveline and suspension. That's cool. Why bother with a Contour? Part (most) of the reason the car is good is because of the value! You can't (well, you can now... new Camaro, Mustang, Charger) get a classic looking car with a modern chassis, but you can get a nice-handling, quick, affordable sedan. Get a BMW or an Audi to go rwd/awd, but why mess with a Contour?

IIRC, they were all Zetec 5 speeds. I'm gonna take a guess that nobody with a Zetec is going to pay to get that 4wd tranny shipped over.

You don't have to ship it over, you can drive it over.

Anyone remember seeing that? They drove awd mondeos from england to new york I believe. Across siberia and all that other frozen junk.

give me a few years. this is actually in my plans as to what im going to do with the contour. the AWD with a boosted zetec would be one bad motha. still would not be the best in the drag but again its a contour it wasnt designed for drag racing.

I don't know why do people bother with Gremlin's, Vega's, or Fiero's?? I've seen plenty of those cars with massive V8's crammed in there. It's all about what a person whats to customize. If they're heart and soul is with a Contour then so be it. Someone could have said the same thing about putting a turbo in a Contour a few years back. But go figure someone went ahead and did it. Now look around... there's kits for sale and plenty of people asking "how can I do that?". If someone successfully converts a Contour to AWD here I'm sure more people will climb on board and parts may find there way into kits and then who knows. Look how many V8 conversion kits are out there for the Pontiac Fiero's! It's still a Fiero in the end, but who cares. It's fast as hell!

Well, there you have it. An AWD Contour can be had in New York.

Well... if it was improperly imported in the US (i.e. they didn't change stuff to DOT/NTHSA specs), then they had to be destroyed so no parts could be used... or exported out of the country.

I've been reading up on this stuff for a bit now... trying to find some kind of loophole that will let me import a "non-conforming" euro spec car that can't be converted.

Cars do NOT have to be converted to be in America.

There is a guy in Florida with a mondeo. And there have been reports of others.
