You could also look at a Jag X type since it is basically a Contour.
From what I understand, it would require a lot of floor pan sheet metal modification to allow for the rear axle since the Contour never was designed with AWD in mind. I also understand that there were a few Mondeos built with AWD, but they required extensive modification for the same reason.
So go find a Jag X type in a wrecking yard, and remove not only the trans, transfer case, and rear axle, but take a torch to the rear floor pan as well. And don't forget anything else that must be moved out of the way either (fuel tank, etc).
Why not just start with a Jag X type?
