Tough to say if it was on purpose. With the HANS device drivers wear, this seems to happen alot with everyone now. You can't turn your head to check blind spots and you don't realize someone else is there and bang.
Same thing in CART,Indy and F1.

I can't see drivers doing it on purpose anymore. They were warned in the Driver's Meeting. Too much money at stake to be sent to the back of the longest line.
