You guys that have widescreen TV's obviously have HDTV's. What is your experience with them in receiving regular SD reception? I've heard a lot of complaints that HD TV's display regular SD programming really poorly. And for those of us without access to HD signals, I question if buying a HD capable TV is a wise move? Thoughts?

Standard signals definitely are a lower-looking quality. The difference is further exaggerated when watching recorded standard definition off a TiVO, which looks pretty damned bad.

Is it enough of a difference to sway my decision? Depends.

If I was going to stay the same size, I'd just stick with the TV I had for another year or two until HD programming became more widespread than just major networks.

If I was going to stay the same size but needed a new TV anyway it went, I'd just go ahead and buy an HD TV. No reason to throw money at a new SD when you can put it towards an HD.

If I was going to go up a fair amount in size, I'd just deal with the lower-quality image off the HD. The added size of the TV makes it worth it.

If I was upgrading from an older rear-projection unit, I'd definitely go HD, period.

That said, one of the biggest reasons that most people have very noticeable issues with the quality of SD signals on HD televisions is that they get TVs too large for their rooms. HDs have optimal viewing distances and there's a HUGE difference in image quality when you're sitting too close. The difference of just a couple feet can make a horrible SD signal look pretty good or vice versa.
