This sounds EXACTLY like my secondaries problem. Look at the linkage, and see if it moves when you start the car/rev it. It should be open (linkage forward) when the engine is off, then close (shift back) when you start it, and open again past ~3200 rpm at WOT. I'm going to do some diagnosis on mine tomorrow, so maybe I'll be able to give you some help finding trouble spots. This isn't a widely known problem because all other MY Contours have electrical secondaries which fail differently, although much more frequently.
