AARGH! While driving home from work yesterday my engine went dead. I'm pretty pissed off. It only had 118,800km on it. It was a 1997 Mystique GS with V6/5-spd combo. There was hardly any warning. I've always used Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I was driving along the highway doing 90km/h (56 mph) in 5th gear and all of a sudden there seems to be a noise like marbles coming from the driver's side of the engine, a loss of power and a James Bond blue oil smokescreen coming out the tailpipes blinding everyone behind me. The temp guage read normal, the oil light or check engine lights never came on. I'm told a used engine with less than 50,000km on it is $2300 Cdn. Adding in labour cost and taxes (15%), I'm looking at a $4000 bill. Everything else about the car is mint, but that's about what the car is worth and it's hard to justify putting that kind of money into it. I think I may just tow it home and strip the absolute crap out of it. It's the Emerald Green colour with grey cloth. As far as I can tell the tranny and gearbox are excellent. Any hints or comments?

First make sure the tranny is OK; then:

3L from a 2001+ Taurus or Sable for about $650 CN and install it yourself in a weekend.

Enjoy.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

maybe you threw a rod and punched a hole in the block?
I would go with the 3L idea as well. They are very abundant, more power, similar MPG and there is tons of info here.

You're right, I don't know why I said that. There's some considerable prep work to be done if you want it done right.

Heh yeah it'll probably take you a couple weeks and cost a little under 2gs CAD by the time you are done. Still not a bad idea, I've done it to my 96 Mystique, a pre98 Mystique makes a great sleeper. I have a good contact at a local wreckers (in the GTA), PM me if you want his information. If you mention my name he'll give you a discount. If you like your car I say do it, it's got low kilometers. Still pretty surprising that the engine went Oh BTW if you were planning on having a local shop do it, I say forget it. There are too many little thing that have to be done, you'd probably end up spending over 4gs easy.

Would it be a 3L Vulcan or Duratec? I assume you mean the Duratec. Would it match up correctly to a manual tranny? As far as I know everything else is fine, including the tranny.

I'm not exactly sure what happened. I should get a diagnosis next week. I managed to find an engine and will have it installed for $1800 Cdn.taxes included.(15%). It also comes with a 1 year/20k warranty. The guy who's installing it for me is good. I trust him. He works on my other 8 cars.

I found out that yes indeed that it was a rod that broke. Another mechanic told me that Ford built the rods by forging metal filings together. Does this sound correct?

Never talk to that mechanic again.
