Actually, it was a lady, and I'd be interested to see if she works for one of the two news sources you consider to be adequate. And that other reporters laughed indicates the obsurdity of the question.
The coverage is despicable, considering that they made the story out to be that the press wasn't told about the event until a few hours after it happened, not what the story really was. Until the media abandons their self-righteousness, they will continue to be a laughing stock.
I just saw one reporter on the Washington Post saying Cheney shot the guy with a 29-gauge shotgun.
10, 12, 16, 20, and .410 gauge...

After seeing all this...it's a good thing Cheney dodged the Vietnam draft. Imagine him with automatic weapons.

He was carrying a 28, though. As an *informed* Washington Post reporter (and also an experienced hunter) described it, "the advanced hunter's choice".

There are 28 gauge shotguns in use today, but they mostly are the side/side or over/under crowd (think Beretta, Purdey or Holland & Holland). I've only seen 28 gauge chambered in break-open guns; never in pump or auto...
29 gauge was someone that didn't know what they were talking about.
At one point in time, there were "commercial" grade shotguns in the 10, 8, 6 and 4 gauge varieties, as well as a few other "offshoot" chamber sizes. These were typically mounted on boats or wagons and were the equivalent of having a 20mm flak gun dialed in for zero altitude. Commercial hunters of 70-100 years ago used these on geese and ducks. The amount of shot and powder these rounds held made it easier to reach higher and take out a wider swath of birds...
You certainly didn't see one putting a 4 gauge to their shoulder.

I just thought I'd share this...
There's a guy in the office from India (apparently not very familiar with bird hunting). Today, after reading that doctors removed 9 or so pellets from the lawyer, this guy comes and asks:
"I don't quite understand this...they say there were 9 bullets. How many times did Cheney actually shoot him ? "
This one took the cake... the whole office was on the floor rolling for minutes. Just imagine Old Dick pulling the trigger, reloading, pulling, reloading, yelling Die lawyer, die!
