98.5 svt contour. I took the screen off the bottom of the fuel pump and ran the car. Now if I give it good throttle accelerating in first it hesitates badly making the car jerk very hard. Before removal, the car would have hesitating accelerating over 3000 rpm bad not as bad as now. Once I get into higher gears, the car runs smooth. What can be causing this new problem. Also, if the fuel pump is bad, what is a good aftermarket replacement? Thanks.......

Did you change the fuel filter? You may have stirred up some sediment during the screen removal.

The fuel filter is only a couple monthes old. Do you think it could have been clogged up again this quick? I took the sock off yesterday.

It is bad... http://store.mauromotorsports.com/walbrofuelpump.html Fuel filter is so rarely the culprit.

Your 8-year-old gas tank may have more sediment than you think.

Read My Post On FSVT Smart Pump How-To. That May Clear A Few Things Up. You Should Also Use That Pump As Your Aftermarket Solution.

How's the plugs and wires? Can cause misfires and carbon tracks, lurching acceleration.

Hold the phone.
Your 98.5 does not have the returnless system. Removing the fuel pump screen seldom has any benefit unless you have the returnless system, which did not come into use until mid 99.
The Focus smart pump probably is not an answer for your return system.
Start over. Change the fuel filter. If problem persists, find a fuel pressure gauge to hook up and drive so that you can see if the fuel pressure drops off when it is acting up. If it is, you probably do need a fuel pump (remember to change the fuel filter before testing the fuel pressure).

I like the idea of monitoring with a fuel pressure guage, this seems to be the best way to troubleshoot the problem. What is the best way to set it up to monitor during driving? Also is the Walbro GSS-342 the correct pump for the svt? the link in this thread doesnt say anything about Ford products.

Check into this before you play with the fuel system.
