Ok guys i have a 98 svt contour and since the day i bought the car the cruise hasnt worked. Now the other day when i did my uim and lim cleaning i looked over most of the cruise parts that are under the hood. The cable is hooked up and all the plugs and what not are plugged into the box where the cable runs into. Now i have not taking the steering wheel off or looked at anything under the dash so my question is does anyone know where i should start??? What should i look at??? I looked at the manual and i dont see any fuses that pertain to the cruise control. What else could be the problem??? Could it be the unit under the hood is bad??? Is there any way i can check to figure out this problem??? Anyone have any imput???
thanks jason

double check the cruise control cable at the throttle body. I had the same problem and that cable looked clipped on, but when i double checked it was a little loose.

Clock spring probably went bad. If you start anywhere that would be it. If it goes bad you may lose cruise control, get an airbag light, or have your horn not work (or any combination of the three). Good Luck

the horn works fine and there is no air bag light on... N both have been working fine since the day i bought the car unlike the cruise control... So with that in mind do you still believe it could be the clock spring???

no I said get a service manual, you can find them in hard copy or on cd, in it will be a pin point procedture to test the cc system
9 out of 10 says it is the control unit itself, just go to a junk yard and get another from any year/model contour or mystique and maybe even the cougar. or if you have another contour swap it out and see if that is the problem

If i go call a couple local junk yards for this cruise control unit are they all the same??? Meaning mine is a 98 2.5 does it matter if i grab the unit out of say a 98 2.0??? or even a different year 2.0??? cuz the 2.0's i know for sure there is a couple junk yards local that have them layin around... But honestly i've never even seen a 2.5 sittin at the junk yards locally...

I am pretty sure it still COULD be the clock spring. I'm no genius, but it helped my cruise.
