Tell that to Shi'ite women who were mutilated and raped in many of Hussein's prisons over 20+ years. I seem to recall reading about one lady who had over a couple of hundred cigarette burns over almost every square inch of her body...
...and she was one of the lucky ones that was ultimately released instead of dumped into a mass grave somewhere.
Progressive, indeed.
There do exist moments where I actually think that some Americans give a melancholy sigh for Hussein and the way he ran Iraq, just as long as they can plaster his iron-clad control over certain aspects of the country vs. what is being shakily built today.
Neither the US, Britian or any of our allies went into Iraq under the pretense of liberating it solely and utterly for the grand purpose of Democracy, though this is precisely the hand that we have been dealt and are challenged with now. Actually, it's coming close to the time where this endeavor will be passed (or forced) upon the Iraqi people to fulfill themselves.
Nah, it's going to have to get a HELL of a lot worse before I'll give Hussein a pat on the back for doing something similar to what Pol-Pot tried and failed at in Cambodia...
