Is there/what is the best thing to do with the pre-cats/cats to get some extra power? I saw about modifying the y-pipe but that looks like a lotta work, and I also don't want to spend much money. Will removing the main cat add power or is the y-pipe so restrictive it would do nothing?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I think it's obvious I've never really had reason to pay attention to duratec stuff before. Time to learn. Thanks.

Uhm...w/out going headers, you could gut the precats. Some people say it has helped, other say it only helps if they are clogged (high mileage car) But if you've seen the pics I have of the stuff that in em...ew. Also, y-pipe mod is probably the best bang for the buck thing you can do...from free to like $40 tops if you bring it to a shop. I don't know too much about modding the main cat so I'll let someone else talk about that.

Modifying the stock Y-pipe would be the cheapest bang for the buck.
Gutting the precats will not make any notable difference except in exhaust volume and harshness. (well unless they are plugged) The older models are more prone to clogged precats.

It's a 98.5 w/ 125k miles so I wouldn't doubt that they're plugged.
With modding the y-pipe, the how-to shows you having to do some cutting/welding then fitting to the car and then some more work. I think the shops around here would charge more than $40 (even with me taking it off, fitting it). Maybe I'll just keep an eye on the classifieds.

$40 or $50 would be a good price to mod a Y at a welding shop. It really is easy work, and they'll do a fantastic job of it. If you take the Y to a muffler shop, bend over baby Kremit...
As for the pre-cats, you might want to do the mystery mod if your car has a tendency to stall or sup'm (i.e. if you're certain that they are a problem), but the performance gain would not be noticable if they're not clogged/deteriorating.
Save up for MSDS headers, sup'm like $228 shipped from Marty & you don't really have to worry too much about coatings in the south - except for the heat shielding benefits. Heat won't be too much of a problem if you run the stock air box and perform a few engine bay venting tricks... THAT is bang for the buck.

Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

Thanks for all the info.
Got another question. I'm used to 4 bangers, and the svt rpm doesn't drop quickly at all. I don't know if this is the throttle hang or just how a v6 acts. Will doing the TH fix help?

Yep. Little hole in 1/2 copper cap. Insert into hose just before the IAC valve. Works like a charm.

my rpms falling don't seem that bad to me. I always considered doing this to my car (a 95) to see the difference, but I read that it also effects performance..........any thoughts on that subject he should know about.
