Welcome to the boards first of all Secondly, a lot of peeps are gonna tell ya to use the search button, kinda ignore them and don't get pissed, it's how this place works sometimes scroll down and go through the performance section. lots and lotsa info there. Do a lot of reading before you start asking a lot of questions. this site has a plethora of knowledge and information. what you can do depends on your personal taste and budget. There is a lot of things to do as you'll see.
enjoy the site Mike

at the age of 17, w/ a V6 I would wait for a year and save some money and go to a good driving school. stock V6 has enough potential to kill you as it is.
don't take what I said personally, I'm not trying to be an old fart pain in the butt, but just think about it. a good driving scool will give you more potential than any mods you can get for twice the amount.
welcome to the group

I'm with you, Alex. Being a pain in the butt mama myself, I won't let my 18 yr. old drive my Tour anywhere further than two miles from the house. He has to drive the Olds Custom Cruiser (aka the Tank) when he's on his own. The V6 is just too damn much fun and too fast for you young dudes to play with. When I was 18 I drove around my grandpa's Mercury; and I paid for it myself. So anyway, my advice you didn't ask for: Get some experience, save some money; go for the mods later...

Althought I would say go all out and make that car fast I would agree with everyone elses comments. I being 20 find the zetec is more then i need. I took my mothers 99 out the weds and I was always flying around, almost redlining and slamming the shifts, burn outs, so much fun. Then thursday I took my gandmothers 90 crown vic out, again i was speeding around and trying to lay down some strips. Now I have my mothers windstar for the weekend and the same, fast and trying to lay down some strips. I have self control but it was way to much fun. I have the speeding ticket already so I need to stay cool. Also I would love to go to a driving school, so go for that, you have a lot of time to make you car fast, take care of it and it will last a long time

Geez, when I was 16 I was driving an '81 Cutlass that was running low 13's - high 12's on the 1/4 mile. When I turned 18 I bought my SVT.

Well, looks like I gotta agree with everyone. Bear in mind the V6 has a lot more power than most other motors in cars this size. I didn't start bolting crap onto my car until I drove it stock for a couple years. The cool thing about these cars is that they're fun right out of the box. Enjoy that fact first, then explore the potntial of your new ride!
1998 Contour Sport V6, Black *Cold air induction *Powdercoated intake manifold (more powdercoating coming soon) *Blue headlights, foggies, and signals (no reflectors) *CEG stickers & removed door moldings -------------------------------- 1994 Ford Aspire 4-door, looks like a big egg *64 hp 4-cyl *5 speed *"13 steel rims with go-cart tires *74 mph top speed *I'm going to auto-x the thing (but not compete)

HAAHAAHAA! Welcome investexp! You know, my first car that I cut my teeth on was a '67 Plymouth Barracuda. 383 cu in 335 bhp (insurance purposes dunno actual hp). Posi traction....FAST. I was raised in a family with two of these cars. My dad has a '70 340 'cuda that has been slightly lowered in front and has been bored .30 over. Much torque....it twisted the frame a bit just from the eng.
One thing I was taught early is DON'T UNDERESTIMATE YOUR CAR! Drive your car!!! BUT there is a difference between driving normal and driving defensively. YOU MUST anticipate the other idiots on the road. KNOW YOUR CAR and it's quirks. If you don't know every way that your car is going to respond then don't push things.
Congrats on the car! Do your mods! DRIVE CAREFULLY! You wreck....don't tell us or we will have to kick you in da be-hind....naaaah just kidding.

'96 Mystique, Zetec, MTX. ---Mods--- Removed both intake resonators and airbox. Installed APC air filter and APC crankcase ventilation filter. Removed exhaust resonator. Installed XM Satellite Radio. Replaced bad alternator and 175a fusible link...much fun! Intake plenum---GONE!!!! My car growls louder than yours. If I can't buy it, I'll build it...Trust Me!!!!

let me clarify: this is not about how much power a 17 or 23 or 50 y.o. can safely handle. this is about the most efficient way to spend money. 37hp or 700hp does not matter, a good performance driving school gives the edge to anybody no matter what they drive.
