Whoever it was that suggested Linux hit the nail on the head, Ubuntu (or Kubuntu) seem to be easy installs, and good at recognizing all kinds of hardware, whattya got to lose right?

Yes it will run, but I highly suggest adding more memory. I installed XP on a basic Windows ME (Worst Windows ever!) machine. It was slow as hell until I added more RAM and now it's actually useable.

Ubuntu burned to a disc is an awesome alternative. I've used it, the user interface is not at all that different. It comes loaded with text and picture softwares that windows does.

Why not?

Just an alternative suggestion from experience using it

XP won't run on that machine.

It'll crawl, maybe even walk.

But definitely won't run.

More ram isn't an option because #1) it's maxed already and #2) it's a 9 year old laptop and I'm not spending a dime on it. Which is the beauty of this thing, I leave it everywhere and never worry about it getting stolen.

I just need something that is more wireless network friendly and has MS Office, a browser, and a media player newer than 6.whatever. It's only used about once a month on average so I can't justify purchasing a new one.

will it work? yes, technically. but just barely. strip everything and i mean everything that you do not need and set everything else besides the basic os to not start at boot. i have a 700mhz pIII laptop on which i run xp pro with sp2 and all of my crap and it runs just fine because i have it set up just right. if i can get word from office 2k to run on a 100mhz pI with 4MB of ram (if you want proof then stop by) then you can get xp to run on your dinosaur.

You're an idiot. Home is no different than Pro as far as resource use.

It's going to run very, very slow. A clean install with NOTHING else might be workable, but as you add programs and Windows gets gunked up it'll become unbearable quickly. I'd stick with 98SE (not ME!) or Linux (if you can get the drivers... it can be a pain).

Well I'm no computer wiz, I just gave in my 2cents. I don't really know the difference between PRO and Home. I have a "older" computer (5 years old maybe, with updated memory) running XP Home that had ME and that WAS the worst Windows you could ever get, it froze up constantly, I think it crashed a couple times for no reason. Plus I only seen XP Home never seen PRO before, so I wouldn't know the differences if there is any. I just thought PRO had more stuff on it then Home since it was suppost to be the "upgraded" version of it.
So, why don't you please think about stuff before you call someone an idiot.

Well, honestly... if you don't know then you really shouldn't be throwing your 2 cents in. Thats like me throwing my 2 cents in on a thread about nuclear physics. I don't really know much about that topic, so i really wouldn't be able to make an educated addition to the thread. Albeit he didn't need to call you an idiot, but really what you said was kinda stupid.

Differences between Pro and Home

Pro is really designed for the business network environment and supposedly has advanced security as well as enhanced networking functions. It is enough for my school to supply XP Pro for free and require that you use it on their network, but not absolutely necessary for an average user on a home network.

That said, I'd still get Home if for a laptop that old since you'll probably not use half its features on it, especially given the added cost (for those of us who buy our software).

The fresh install of XP is complete and it runs great--much better than a 4+yr installation of 98SE. There's only one problem, space!! XP+SP2 = 3gb and I've only got a 4gb HDD. Doh! With Office 2k installed I've only got about 700mb free. Is XP really that big? System Restore is off and those files are deleted. Doesn't SP2 make a backup of files before installing? Can those backup files be deleted? Are they already deleted?
