on a Dell-like TS30T laptop PII 266mhz 160mb
I'm talking barebones OS install. This laptop is used mainly on business trips for internet but I have an extra copy of XP and am contemplating using it.

In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.

I have an inspirion 7000. (P2-366 iirc) and it runs fine with XP pro (much faster then win2000 did btw)
160 mb memory is good for a "fast" bootup of XP (128 mb being what I consider the minimum for a quick bootup)
go for it.

You're an idiot. Home is no different than Pro as far as resource use.
It's going to run very, very slow. A clean install with NOTHING else might be workable, but as you add programs and Windows gets gunked up it'll become unbearable quickly. I'd stick with 98SE (not ME!) or Linux (if you can get the drivers... it can be a pain).

I'm running XP on a PII 233 with 64M RAM and a 4G HDD. XP is considerably faster than '98 was, and boots much sooner. What I did was just set my MSCONFIG startup options so that only the things I needed to run would be used at startup. I installed XP, AVG Free, Spybot, AD-Aware, and Firefox. With that installed it runs fine and is completely bearable to use. I use it for the same things. Mostly for travelling but also for my OBD scanner software. XP is definitely doable on an older machine you just have to get it setup correctly.

You can run it, but as said already, it will be SLOW!
Make sure you put it in "Classic" mode for the theme. It will run so much better.
I had to do that on my old Celeron 400MHz/160MB laptop to be bearable for me.

it's like asking if a civic can be a 10 second car. yea, if you strip it down and decide to only use it for racing, it can. I wouldn't recommend XP on that laptop, you gonna be snoozin

Ya, I was going to recommend 2000 at the most, but I'm sure he has some good reasons for wanting XP on it...
Those same reasons could be applied to Server 2003... it's basically super stripped XP Pro (meaning all the warm fuzzies are gone here). Drawback is that you can't install some programs on it since it's a "real" server OS... (i.e. it will run on a 133MHz/128MB P1!)
Well as real as the registry saying "server" instead of "workstation" or something. TweakNT takes care of that real quick... but then you've got a stripped XP Pro. Even changes the 2003 boot screens to XP Pro's after the change (means you can make your XP Pro into Server 2003)... No wonder why Microsoft says TweakNT is illegal!
Oh, if anyone has Server 2003 lying around , check out this page to get back the games, XP themes, etc.
