And I don't see the Caliber going on a diet to lose 1/4-ton either.

The Caliber weighs as much as my Mazda6 does -- up to 600lbs more than the last-generation Neon, and ~400lbs more than the Mazda3. (Though it's obviously unknown what the respective performance versions will weigh)

Not to say that the Mazda3 is going to be faster; it very likely won't be. Making the fastest 1/4-mile car in the class is never one of Mazda's high priorities. But the ET difference will probably be less than pure numbers make it appear.

Theres some that will buy the Caliber SRT-4 for its pure, brutal power, but theres some that will want the total package and that could very well be the MS3. The regular Mazda 3 was on my short list last year under "cheaper" cars compared to the Mustang GT. A loaded Mazda 3 w/ Nav was like $23K, then factor in the Ford "A" plan and the car was probably a tad over $20K. I still think its a bargain and the MS3 will be even more of a bargain IMO. It looks like the fall of 2006/spring of 2007 is going to be very interesting

Just another short addition, someone finally took a MazdaSpeed6 to the track -- it ran a 13.7 on their first trip. Surely with enough practice and with some better drivers (the driver is, admittedly, not the best drag racer) the times will get even lower.

In addition numerous buyers are getting their MS6s dyno'd. They're all getting about 225/270 at the wheels (the MS6 is obviously severely under-rated in torque). Even the guy who previously had problems getting a full dyno run previously got a full set of perfect runs and hasn't been having any additional problems.
