estimated and radar need to both be checked becasue the police officers are trained how to point and shoot the radar gun or look at the display of the permanent mounted ones. Because they use the radar to issue fines or generate revenue federal trade laws require that the equipment must be calibrated on a yearly basis and the operator trained in the use of the equipment. Most depts. don't calibrate the equipment yearly and they won't spend the money to give the officers the detailed training as a radar operator in order to be pursuant to these laws. In the eyes of these laws most police radar systems are only used to estimate the speed of a vehicle. If you chose to challenge the ticket in court, if the equipment wasn't recently calibrated and the officer not trained as a radar operator is accordance with the applicable federal code of regulations (CFR) the ticket wouldn't hold up in court unless the ticket was marked as estimated speed becasue thats all their equipment can legally do.
