_____The U.S. base was targeted because the United States "is the leader of Europe and the leading infidel in the world," said Sher Mohammed, a 40-year-old farmer who suffered a gunshot wound while taking part in the demonstration in the city of Qalat.
"They are all the enemy of Islam. They are occupiers in our country and must be driven out," Mohammed said. Wednesday's violence began when hundreds of protesters tried to storm the U.S. base, said Ghulam Nabi Malakhail, a provincial police chief. When warning shots failed to deter them, police shot into the crowd, killing four and wounding 11, he said.
Flying rocks injured eight police and one Afghan soldier, he said.
Two Pakistanis arrested for allegedly firing at police were being questioned to see whether they were linked to al-Qaida, Malakhail said. Some officials accuse al-Qaida of inciting three days of bloody riots across Afghanistan that have left 11 dead.
Protesters also burned three fuel tankers waiting to deliver gasoline to the base, said Malakhail. He said U.S. troops fired warning shots into the air."""_____

I'm surprised no one has picked up on this yet. What is your reaction to this story?
Andrew
They get mad we draw a cartoon but they have no problem burning the US flag ?
unfortunately we have our own people who burn the flag, and are allowed to.

Senior cleric Mohammed Usman called today for a stop to the violence. Seems some of the members of the ulama council went on the radio and television yesterday trying to calm down people. Looks like they are finally getting the message that moderates need to step up and put a stop to this.
But is it too little too late?

In what sense? The radicals will continue to protest and kill themselves. The moderates will either sympathize with the extremists or not, but they're not going to leave their homes to do anything. So I don't see these protests turning into much beyond what they already are. And the various ME governments aren't going to change their foreign policies based on this.
On the other hand, I would agree that this episode is just one of many small things that propagandists will use to further their "cause."

Good one, JaTo. I may use that quote in the future, and will certainly try to keep it in my personal repertoire.
There's a lot to consider in this story besides free speech, as we've discovered. The effect this has on Muslim - Western relations & the troops in the field, Muslims seemingly imposing their belief system on others, and just plain tolerance, courtesy, and/or forethought on all sides. Complex situation, indeed.
After all the debate, I really don't know where I stand on this - especially considering I have been a newspaperman myself. One thing I do know, the offense was not worth the cost of a single life. IMHO, the Muslim community must rise up to help put an end to the terror tactics & inhumane behavior that fueled the creation of such cartoons.
Goonz is in a very difficult spot as a Muslim. I assume he abhors the killings, I know he abhors the poor press that resulted, and he feels helpless to change things for the better. It will take courage & strength of numbers for the Muslim community to overcome the poor image that has been painted by the terror groups, but the solution is within their reach if they would only grasp it
Must be that jumbly-wumbly thing happening again.

In the sense that they should have done it a few days ago? Like right after the first reports of riots and violence. I think that if they had come out with a strong stance like this from the start, much of the violence could have been avoided.

If they did, the rioters would assume that the goverment/clerics are being controlled by the us or europe. Its a lose lose situation. Anybody who stops them is evil to them. Fuged up if u ask me.
I bet they wouls say now our goverment is trying to hold us back. Down with the goverment!!!
They are retarded this way. The brighter ones left the country when they could. And so did the ones from iraq.
Now the remaing are the hopefully ones for reconsrtuction. ANd the dumb $hits destroying everything.
Tough battle for W to fight.

Swedish government has shut down a website with cartoons depicting Muhammed. Hooray for the progressive, free, western world! link
-- 1999 SVT #220 --
In retrospect, it was all downhill from here. RIP, CEG.
