a lot of sony's stuff is crap, much agreed. you've just got to be selective about it. look up specs, etc. know the kind of internal power source and amplification, THD, and those type of numbers.
for instance, in my old car i was running an Alpine CDA-7863, among the best decks alpine's ever put out - all features and quality, no complaints.
i'm currently running a Sony CDX-M630, powering my 4 doors (Clarion SRC5795 x 4) and running signal to a Sony Xplod XD500X amp which powers 2 MTX T6124A's (12's) with 250w rms/per.
the speaker set-up is exactly what i had running in my old car, running off the Alpine deck.. and i'll tell ya, i wouldn't go back.
sound q went up 50% at least for me.

again though, it's all opinion. the more you hear, the more you'll know what you like.
