If you cannot do the 450$ motor...I don't think you can really afford to do anything. Sorry...the work you will put into the 96 motor will well surpass what your budget seems to be at.

correct me if I am wrong here, but isn't it only 2000 (or 2001) and newer taurus engines will work for this....right?

They work the CHEAPEST...well Demon had mentioned that a 96 3L won't work, but I am not for certain on that one. I will let him chime in.

a 96 three liter will work fine,as long as your doing a hyrid, the earlier three liters didnt use a cam driven water pump like our engine does, also a couple of the bellhousing bolt holes dont line up..but it will work, tom has proven that...way back

So remind us again what your budget is. I can't imagine $200 is your TOTAL budget? You'll have that much wrapped up in gaskets, bolts and fluids alone. $450 for an engine is dirt cheap. If you buy the $135 96 engine, DEFINITELY replace the rod bearings at a minimum, and I'd even do the mains. Any chance you're working a part time job or something, where you could up your budget a little? I don't even know where to go with this post until we know how much you have to work with.

boy I thought I had a constrictive budget lol. yeah dude get a part time job or something, even if you can get that engine in, all the random junk that you need to make it work (well) is going to be way way more than $200. put it this way, it was more than $200 for my intake, plugs, wires, and windshield wipers+washer fluid. I found out from the 96 that if it's not running good when you get it, don't get it. these cars are absolute money pits if they don't work and it is sometimes very difficult to identify a problem when you don't know whats making it not work. I agree with the other dude, go get a honda, I bet you can get a 86-90 prelude that runs for like $200 to $250, I bought one last year for $350 and it was awsome untill I "accidentally" had a honda demo derby with my buddies. btw hondas last in demo derby's, if the other cars are also hondas lol.

the 'lude was great, it would like to get stuck under the other cars since its shape was much more wedge like than most civics and the occasional accord, (1 'lude, 3 civics (1 was a crx) and 1 1/2 accords) but yeah it was way fun.
