hey whats up guys i first want to start out with a huge thank you to all the guys who were helping me with the 3L decision. i am having some regrets about it but i couldnt turn down a running 2.5L pulled out of a 98 tour for $125. perfect start to a first rebuild. my plans for the 2.5 are to drop in some svt cams and port and polish for starters. any other power tips are welcome please. interesting question but is the 2.5 worth giving a bore over to a 3L? is it possible? and will the power be similar to that of a stock 3L? anyone done it? please post ideas

No one has done it because its cheaper to buy a 3.0L from the get go since your going to need at a bare minimum custom pistons ($700) and balanced crank (~$650 once you bore the engine). Not to mention, your still left with the oil passage problem with the 2.5L that you could have solved with the 3.0L.

I guess it just sorta confuses me that your talking about porting and polishing the heads ($1000 minimum from kinger) and possibly boring the block. I hear the word "college rebuild" and I assume your on a budget. You could have bought a 3.0L for like $500, not bored it, and pnp'ed the heads and came out ahead.

What Jim said is correct. You're wasting money trying to get the 2.5 to 3.0 levels.

Since you have the 2.5 and it sounds like you are on a budget since you opted to pay $125 for a 2.5 rather than a 3.0 for around $600-$800.

1. Port match everything - LIM, UIM, TB
2. Optimize TB

Should've Bought A Honda Hatchback With That 125.00 Dollars!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!LOLOLOLOLOL!!!
I'm Just Kiddin Man! But You Should Definitely Try To Turn That Running 2.5 Around And See If You Can Make A Profit. Then Take That Money And Buy The 3L. Hell, You Should See If A Junk Yard Would Trade You Straight Up Since There Are Many More 3L's Than 2.5 Maybe They'll See That As A Beneficial Piece Of Gear To Have On There Shelves. Just An Idea. Not even. It's not that hard to find a good, low-mileage 3L for around $300-$400. You just have to search like all hell. But like they said above, the 2.5L with all bolt-ons available (minus a turbo if you consider that a bolt on) isn't going to compare to the 3L. Not saying you can't get alright power out of the 2.5, but just don't ecpect it to be near a 3L capabilities.

The 2.5 cannot be bored to a 3.0. The cast iron sleves in the aluminum block are not big enough and any attempt to change the sleves would render the block useless.

The SVT cams are expensive.

Porting might be a good do it yourself project if you can get some guidance. A good porting job can yield a very impressive power increase. If done wrong, it can hurt power.
