All PPIs are for daily use and take a couple days before they work to their full effect. H2 Blockers work in 30-45 minutes and should be taken before meals that cause problems, however they can be used once problems have started, but you'll have to wait the 30-45 minutes before getting any relief. Pepcid Complete has both an H2 and 2 antacids. The antacids work fastest, because they neutralize the acid. Tums woks, but the calcium in it may cause relapse in the acid release.
PPIs: Rx; Nexium, Prevacid, Protonix, Aciphex (no avail generics)
OTC: Prilesec. Note, this should not be taken more than 14 days without MD approval (must rule out other problems)
H2 Blockers: OTC= Zantac 75, Zantac 150, Pepcid, Tagamet (careful with this one as it has MANY drug interactions)
Antacids: Calcium Carbonate (Tums), Magnesium Carbonate(Tums complete and others), Sodium Bicarbonate (baking Soda... lol yes it will work if you can get it down)
