Has anybody experienced this? Must be a gas leak, I guess. Is it dangerous to drive until I have time to get it into a shop?

Any CEL codes? Could be catalytic converter or fuel injector nose seals. Not really knowing what the cause is, it would be hard to say whether it is safe to drive with a gas smell in the passenger cabin. Check for gas leaks below the car or in the engine bay.

my mothers 99 was like that until we took it to the dealer for a cat efficiency CEL and they reprogrammed it and has been good to go since

I had this happen once after I took apart my upper and lower intake. I put everything back together and the car was getting bad mileage on top of really strong gas smell. Ended up one of the fuel injectors hadn't seated properly in the lower intake manifold and was leaking small amounts of fuel over the top of the engine. I thank God I found the problem in a few days and I didnt start a fire. I took everything apart and reseated the injector- problem solved.

is the gas smell in the cabin only? I ben experiencing some less than normal mileage and i am smelling gas from time to time, but nothing outside of the car...wondering if my cat is failing as well...
