I'm in the midst of buying a 98 SE (V6 & stick). I told the dealer the car was missing an ashtray and he said he would put in a new one, but his other Contours don't have one either. So he can't canabalize one for me.
Also, the fuel pump whines. My mechanic said pull it ($350ish). Anybody have any idea if he's right? Thanks,

To the best of my knowledge, only pre 98s came with ash trays. 98+ tours only come with the lighter and two useless cup holders. There is however a kit you can buy for around $29 at your Ford dealer that comes with new, sturdier cup holders and an ash tray that fits inside one of the cup holder recesses. Check out the FAQ page for the part number. As far as the fuel pump whining it probably is on its way out and will need to be replaced. Not 100% sure on that so maybe someone else can assist you. A dying fuel pump whines real loud and you can hear it near the fuel tank because it's in the top. You can always hit up Bill Jenkins for the cup holder parts. The kit works. It replaces the little rubber guys in the cupholders, and plops in the existing holes. You can see them in this picture. The only ashtray available for the post-98 is the one included with the cupholder kit. It could also have been had when the car was new by getting the "Smokers Package". If the car has an actual lighter it had one at one time. Not that its really all that useful as an ashtray.
