I beg the differ... I have a 98 SE 2.5L MTX... I have a 98SVT EEC... if I plug the EEC in, I get nothing... a very very very quick blip of the fuel pump, no PATS light, no nothing... it's completely dead. Mind you, I am using the proper cut key for my ignition with the proper original chip for the SVT EEC... there is something different.

Check out how they say to remove the headlight switch... It says for you to pry it out with a screwdriver. You probly already know that we have to remove the lower dash trim, then remove the 2 screws to remove the switch.
Then look how it tells you to change a taillight bulb... pretty straight forward on our cars (1 bulb), where as they show a pic and description for at least 4 bulbs (stop, tail, turn, fog, and maybe backup) in some totally different setup.
Unless they changed it in the last 2 years! If that's the case, then I'm mistaken!

Right, I hear ya. That stuff they do screw up from model year to model year... but my Mustang... they went from a speed density EEC starting in 86 and changed that to a Mass Air setup, the harness and everything was identical with the exception of a few wires... the pinout was slightly different and in some cases (depending on the non MAF car) a couple of wires needed to be added. Anyway, they have both versions in the back of that manual... I would assume it would be the same for the Contour.

todras... I completely agree... production cost wise and so on, they would leave it the same... but they do change the pinout around quite often for different versions of the cars, different years, etc. That's all I want to know... bassicaly how this EEC worked in a 98 SVT and it doesn't in mine... the cars are identical, I have one of my spare keys with the PATS transmitter that matches that EEC. Unless there is something drasticaly in the EEC because of production differences... I don't see why it wouldn't work.
My car is a 98.5... I thought that all SVT's in 98 were also 98.5's... which means that the PATS systems are the same... (older ones have a seperate PATS computer, 98.5 is when they changed it to be integrated in the EEC).
The only other thing I can think of is that a SVT does NOT have traction control... mine does... and that IS EEC driven. That would more than likely change the pinout of the harness... not sure though... that's why I need to look at both of them to see what's different.

Yea and how many non SVT's do not have traction control?

Had a buddy that has a 98 SVT. He has been having a miss problem since he got the car. He has replaced everything! I have him another 98 SVT PCM to swap in. HIs dad owns a Ford dealer and the techs said he needs some specific codes. It's just not a direct swap. More has to be done to the car. There are a ton of other little modules that have to be messed with. He gave up on it after running in the same situation as you. It's just not some plug and play swaping in another PCM is my understanding. Might want to contact Dom on fordcontour.org as he says he swapped an SVT PCM into a non SVT car successfully.

I think Dom is BuckeyeSVT. He is the Big Kahuna there.

Good call... I looked his whole write up... it makes total sense... I have the 98 SVT EEC... I need the 89.5-99SVT computer... I am very unsure about a 00 because it has a returnless fuel system... so I'll stick with one of the few 99 SVT computer codes. I guess that answers my question. Thank you so much you guys, big help. I'll let you know how it goes!

I'm telling you from experience... not in the Haynes Contour manual!
It was ZERO help with the wiring diagrams when trying to trace a short in my car. The Chilton's manual wasn't much help either, but at least they used a Contour (Zetec) and a Mystique (Duratec) for their stuff.
The Haynes manual uses a Mondeo for the Zetec engine stuff, AND all (or most) of the body related stuff (INCLUDING wiring diagrams!). I forget what they used for their Duratec mechanical section (SVT?).
