And why the hell not? we're men aren't we? one of the biggest buying points of my house was the potential for a room in the basement to be turned into a home theater paradise. (Currently in the building stage).

You've got a good point, but I don't know if that's my MAIN selling point. A girl I date built a brand new house, and boy was that layout horrible. Kitchen that opened up to the living room, where there was a fireplace, smack dab in the center of the only usable wall in the entire room. She had them cut out a cubby-hole above the fireplace to put her tv, which looks terrible.
I think people get so excited at the thought of a new house, and see that nice fresh paint everything looks perfectly built, that they forget about the actual layout of the house. If I build a house, I will be designing it myself.

I like the second far more in terms of visual appeal. However, the first one looks like it was built with the interior layout in mind (stairwell out of the way, etc) which may make it a more sensible choice.

There is a whole development in my hometown full of really ugly small houses (think 70s Californian mixed with tri-level traditional) but they were designed from the interior out so the layout is gorgeous inside.
