This is highly illegal.

I wonder if it really is or not. You are, after all, displaying the correct plate information in the correct format except for the reflectivness of the "official" finish.

But that aside, I'm not endorsing it. I have not done it, and I'm not recommending it, but it was an interesting study and worthy of discussion.

It also makes me wonder if there is a way to cut the reflectiveness by some other means. After all, someone is making a mint from selling a spray that alters the reflectivity to thwart red light cameras. It causes the plate to be unreadable from the flash used by the red light camera although it is perfectly readable in normal light.

Now you really have me thinking. I have noticed a lot of busses with badly faded plates. It looks like they may be subjected to diesel fuel. I wonder if whatever degrades the colored paint also degrades the reflectiveness.

Yeah, next time I need a license plate, I'll just print one out myself.

Big Jim, the product I mentioned, Veil, is what you're looking for.

The license plate idea is possibly one of the dumbest suggestions ever made on CEG. I would highly recommend you not to even think about doing it.

Secondly, laser detection is nice, but its basically a "you just got f**ked" alarm. For one, laser is instant on, instant off. So as soon as your detector goes off, it is basically telling you that the officer already knows how fast you are going. The other downside is that laser is very very accurate. Not just at measuring speed, but there isnt any spread (or stray beam) like with radar. What this means to you is that there isnt any "stray" laser for your detector to pick up unless it was aimed directly at you. At least with instant on radar, the radar waves are scattered everywhere so that you can pick them up even if they arent aimed at you. The chances of picking up laser if its not being targeted at you is slim to none.

Still though, laser isnt used all that often. Just pick yourself up a nice detector like the V1 or 8500 and you'll be set for the majority of the time.

The bottom line: the only defense against laser is driving slower.

Darn, no printed license plate for me.

Yes, a detector USUALLY only warns you about laser after you've been hit. Though you can pick up some 'stray' laser sometimes (comes through car windows in front of you,etc.).

The officer will use the laser until he gets a speeder. So even though they can be instant on, he can (and they do) keep it on until they hit a speeder.

Bottom line (again ): the only good defenses against laser are laser jammers and Veil or similar products

No, the bottom line is to slow the f--- down and not drive like like a fool. On public roads you're responsible for more than just yourself; unless you drive off mountain like Kermit attempted.

BTW, for being such an expert on speed detector avoidance, how was it you got a ticket doing 30 over?

lmao!!

game, set, and match to BMR!

as many have said, any detector won't do you a bit of good against laser. if it goes off, you're done.

I'm not trying to jack the thread, but I'm curious about something. I was under the impression that to get an accurate reading from the speed detectors, the officers could not be moving.

I was pulled over and cited the other night (1 AM, 67 in a 55) but the officer was driving south and I was driving north on the road. He immediately U-turned and pulled me over saying I was going 67.

Also, he did not write on the ticket how fast I was going. It just says I "exceeded max speed limit of 55MPH"

This is my first ticket of any sort. Anyone know if there's anything I can do? I don't mind paying the fine (I don't even know what it is yet), I just don't want my insurance rates to go up.

Not true. The radar detectors can take that into account.

"Also, he did not write on the ticket how fast I was going. It just says I "exceeded max speed limit of 55MPH"
Caught a break there.

You may want to see if you can attend a driving program or plead guilty with a prayer for judgement and pay an administrative fine. You need to check if CA has something like that. Maybe post in the CA forum and see what replies you get.
