45 year old house. 1000 sq. ft. Old ass natural gas furnace. Gas heat, gas water heater, gas stove/range. Last month my heat was $220 @ 68 degrees. This month, I bought a digital thermostat($20) and control the heat at 65 while I'm home, and let it cool down to 60 when I'm at work/sleeping. My gas bill this month was $145. Electric has been around $20-30.

Holy crap electricity is high in Texas.
In a 900sqft apartment my bill never went below $100 (even last month where it was a cool 65 degrees almost the entire month) and in the summer would approach $300. In my new house I'm betting it'll be closer to $250/month on average, peaking at $350-400 in the summer.

I have 1600 square foot brick ranch built in 1950 with a basement, 10 year old windows and doors, insulation, and a newer gas fired Lennox pulse furnace. My total bill for gas and electric was about $225 for December. I'm on budget billing, so my average power bill is $141/month for both sources combined, all taxes included.
I have a programable thermostat and when I'm home alone I set it at about 65. When I have my daughter or company, I set it to 70. When away, I set it to 62.
I'm also replacing many of my incandesent bulbs with compact florescents as they fail.

Ok, this was like 3 years ago, but last I remember was my mom complaining about the bill on her house... $700!
This is a big house built in 1837 with a boiler system that was installed in 1904. The system was coal, but converted to oil, then nat'l gas in the 70s.
None of the windows/doors were upgraded, so they all leak BAD.
Coolest thing about the house is that everything is still level and square... I'd say pretty quality on a nearly 170 year old house!
I almost wanna buy it off her and fix it up.

You must not be married lol!!
I have a programable thermostat that keeps the hosue at 72 when I'm there and 68 when I'm not. I don't want it to get too cold while im away or otherwise it takes too long ot get the hosue warmed back up, using too much energy as well. BTW my house is 4 stories (including basement and attic) and is about 1200 sq ft.

Yeah, for about 30 months now, 12 legally.
Divorce has been good to me financially.
I realize you weren't quoting me, but my sitch is similar as is my program for heating the house.
