I have gas heat & water, an old house with leaky windows everywhere and almost no insulation in the walls, and literally none in the ceilings... My heat bills topped out at $175 for one month with my electric that month being $40, and that was December, the coldest month we have had (Jan. has averaged about 55-70 degrees everyday)
