Maybe a stupid question, but the debate is happening here at work...Once you go synthetic oil, you can or can not go back to standard oil!!??
Thanks for any input, I just want to squash this one way or another.

cost would be the only good reason to go back to reg. oil from syn.. I still don't see why it would hurt the motor any, but maybe one of the many engineers on here will know more too.

you can go back but why? cost shouldn't be a concern.
3K miles with dino oil aprox 22 dollars with a good filter
5-7500 miles with syn 33 dollars with a good filter
anyone see a problem here?

To make the math easier for the dummies out there: dino: 3k miles $25 syn: 6k miles $50
Same price (or better) for dino and synthetic.
This subject has been discussed many times. I'll have to dig up some links and put them in the FAQ.

Your numbers don't jive with typical oil life and prices. Dino oil will last about 70% as long as synthetic. And prices of the oil are usually 60-70% less expensive. I still find API certified oil for 1.00 per quart once in a while, but 1.30 is very normal.
What is the best price you have found on Mobil 1? I think i have seen a sale or two that got the price down to be just over 3.00.
I wont get into the performance aspect, but conventional oils still have a fairly distinct price advantage.
Oh, and seals in cars do form a chemical equilibrium over time with the type of oil used so there is some merit, even if minor, to staying with what you have used. Feel free to dispute this, I guarantee my source is more credible than anyone elses.
